Sports & Leisure Tips for Gardeners

1. Get the kids involved: Gardening is a great way to get the kids outside and away from screens. If you have young kids, start small with a pot or small raised bed. Get them involved in planting, watering, and weeding. They’ll be more likely to eat (and enjoy) veggies that they’ve grown themselves.

2. Make it a social activity: Invite friends over for a garden party or potluck. You can work on your garden together, then sit back and enjoy the fruits (and veggies) of your labor.

3. Get active: Gardening is a great way to get some exercise. Digging, planting, and weeding all require some physical activity. And, since you’re outdoors, you’ll get some vitamin D as well.

4. Grow your own food: Not only is it satisfying to eat food that you’ve grown yourself, but you’ll also know that it’s fresh and free of chemicals. Start small with a few easy-to-grow veggies like tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers.

5. Save money: Homegrown fruits and veggies can save you money at the grocery store. And, if you grow enough, you can even sell your surplus at a farmers market or roadside stand.

6. Relax: Gardening is a great way to relax and de-stress. Take some time to enjoy the outdoors, and breathe in the fresh air. Listen to the birds, and take in the beauty of your garden.

“We might think that we are nurturing our garden, but of course it's our garden that is really nurturing us."
